Blog 13. The Tanner Rush Poem.

I wrote this poem for  my sister Beryl some years ago. Hope it helps bring back more memories.

TANNER RUSH

Saturday mornings, the tanner rush, what a place to be
Roy Rogers, Trigger and Gabby Hayes are on screen for us to see
Taking back jam jars to Froggat’s shop for the money to get in
A farthing for half pound, h’appney for pound, but nothing for a tin.

We'd stand and sing the Odeon Club song, can you remember the words
Frank Chadwick always added a few just to impress the girls.
We promised that when we grew up, good citizens we’d be,
Like Roy Rogers, Gabby Hayes and Zorro be champions of the free.

Down with the lights and open the curtain transported into space,
To Planet Mungo, where Flash and Dale defend the human race
Week after week they made their stand, and we’d cheer and stamp our feet
Until they defeated the Merciless Ming, and we’d pour out into the street.

Memories are wonderful things and I just love to share,
The places we went, the friends that we made, close your eyes, are you there,
Elizabeth Hope, Ann Jukes Frank C. queuing with you and me.
Hoping for Technicolour, a rare thing then, and wonderful to see.
We certainly had some great times back in those Guide Bridge days
But Saturday mornings were the best when at the Odeon we’d shout and rave,
As our heroes and heroines came alive on the screen,
fighting dragons, bandits and things.
You loved Shirley Temple, Tom and Jerry cartoons,
Mother Riley and the laughs she would bring.

So come on once more and sing it out loud I’ve written the words here for thee.

We come along on Saturday morning
Greeting everybody with a smile.
We come along on Saturday morning
Knowing it is well worthwhile.
As members of the Odeon clu
We all intend to be
Good citizens when we grow up
and champions of the free.
We come along on Saturday morning
Greeting everybody with a smile, smile, smile.
Greeting everybody with a smile.
