Quakers of the Lands End ( An Acrostic Poem.)


 


 

Questing the people they came

Understood little, but they’d heard his name

 A man of God whom they came to hear

Knowledge from the bible His voice so clear.

 Ellis family from Sennen came to St Ives

Read’s, Vingoe and Tonkyn by their side

Slowly, the wrong people were stirring it up

 

Of Major Ceely, the magistrate seeking control

Fox the preacher called for peace

 

Then Ceeley put an end to his speech

He arrested Fox and a companion

Eventually, they were taken by Jailer Lanyon

 

Launceston castle became their abode.

A sentence to spend time in the Doomsdale

Nine weeks in a living hell, they live to tell the tale.

Determined to spread the truth across the land

Sennen Society of friends, a community of love

 

Enduring hardships, they joined hand in hand

Navigating strife, guided from above

Doing God’s work, with hearts open and grand.

 

 

Left school at fifteen and in my working life have had some 50 jobs, these range from merchant seaman to managing a 400-acre farming estate. My years as a Greenpeace campaigner were probably the most satisfying fighting to defend the wildlife and environment. 10 generations of my wife Sandra Vingoe's family are descended from Sennen in Cornwall U.K. and we have just celebrated 56 years of marriage and have one son who lives with us.in Cornwall.

Blog No. 25 : Did Jesus visit Cornwall?

When I first came to live in Cornwall in 1959 I took a boat trip on the Fal. The boatman took us into the St Just in Roseland Creek to see "something very special," We landed and visited the beautiful church where he pointed out the stone with the early Christian symbol and went on to tell us how Jesus had visited the spot with his uncle as a young man. We then went outside to the seashore where he pointed out the shape of what he said was Jesus's footprint in a rock. I do not know if this story is still told around the area but it fascinated me and so in 2002 when I was building the first website for the Morrab Library in Penzance I came across a small book by  The Rev. H. A. Lewis  on this subject I decided to   spend some time time researching it. I also did the tale of Joseph, and some of the disciples coming to live in Briton after the crucifixion.  St Piran - Man of Tin As we get ready to celebrate St Piran's day I thought I would post some research I did a few years ago.  The Legend Piran's family origins are obscure; tradition says he came from Ireland. Spent his youth in South Wales where he founded a church in Cardiff. Received religious schooling at the monastery of Saint Cadog at Llancarfon, where he would have met Saint Finnian (Born about 495; died 589). The two returned together to Ireland where Finnian founded six monasteries, including his most famous one at Clonard. Piran lived there before Saint Enda on Aran Island, and then Saint Senan on Scattery Island.
